University of North Carolina, School of Public Health EPID 168 - Fundamentals of Epidemiology Twentieth Anniversary Edition (fall 1980 - fall 2000) Brief History (evolving of course !) EPID 168 (Fundamentals of Epidemiology) officially began in the fall of 1980. Previously, epidemiology majors took a special section of EPID 160 (Principles of Epidemiology) [link]. EPID 160 lectures were given by John C. Cassel, M.D. (through 1975) and then by Abdel R. Omran, M.D. The Epidemiology majors section was taught by John Cassel, (1968-1975), Michel A. Ibrahim, M.D. (1976-1977), Gerardo Heiss, M.D. Ph.D. (1978), and Carl M. Shy, M.D., Ph.D. (1979). The first EPID 168 was taught in fall 1980. The course number was changed to EPID710 in fall 2006.
