John Ruffin, Ph.D.John Ruffin, Ph.D. is Associate Director for Research on Minority Health, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health, where he directs the largest program in the country promoting minority biomedical training and health research. Launched by his Office with an initial $45 million in 1992, the Minority Health Initiative has a current funding level of over $80 million. Dr. Ruffin received a Baccalaureate degree from Dillard University, a Master's degree from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in systematic and developmental biology at Kansas State University, after which he carried out postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. He has over 25 years of experience in developing and administering innovative programs designed to train the next generation of minority scientists and to improve the health of minority populations.Dr. Ruffin has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Samuel L. Kountz Award (1997) for his significant contributions to the cause of increasing access and participation in organ and tissue transplantation in minorities, the NIH Director's Award, the National Hispanic Leadership Award, the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society Award, the National Medical Association Award of Appreciation, a Special Recognition Award by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and most recently the Presidential Merit Award. |
