III.Brief History of the Conference

 

 

 

 

Barbara Chavious gave a brief history about the Minority Health Conference's origin. The Conference started over 24 years ago by students and was supported by the Dean's office. It was originally held in Rosenau and in recent years has been moved to the Friday Center due to increased participation. She also distributed flyers from previous conferences.    

IV. Discussion of Committee Functions

 

 

Maceo Thomas gave an introduction to subcommittees descriptions, responsibilities, and roles.

Chandra Ford gave a summary of what the Social Determinants of Health

a. 8/8/01 Meeting highlights

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shelley Francis gave highlights of the 8/8/01 meeting

1)All new members should be added to the MHC List serv24thannualmhc@listserv.unc.edu

2) Five sessions were identified and we are currently working on identifying potential speakers for the following topics:

  • Funding sources
  • City planning
  • Media and advertising
  • Research methods
  • Native American health issues

 

 

 

 

1)Members can add themselves via the website address

2) Identify potential speakers and secure speakers' contact info.

3)Shelley Francis contacted Leslie Randall regarding potential speakers and pertinent issues re: NAH (Native Amer. Health).

Ms. Randall works at CDC in Native American Health and is a MHCH student. Shelley will also talk with Dr. Jane Brown in the School of Communication about pertinent media issues & minority health

b. Vote on Conference Title

 

Committee members discussed nine potential working conference titles. The committee voted on a title. The new working "Social Determinants of Health: Assembling Pieces of the Puzzle"

The committee is open to small revisions to the title but not major revisions

The MHC opened the floor to signing up for subcommittees including chair positions.

Annice Kim suggested having more discussion oriented interactive session,

sSacoby Wilson suggested including a session on methods to treat ailments & cultural views of health care/issues

Next meeting will be held on Sept. 12, 2001. All members should come with speaker recommendations and suggestions for additional sessions MHC members
