  • Background to the MSCalumnet (Vic)
    • Plateauing of minority recruitment - need to pick up the pace
    • Broadcast of Keynote Lecture - potential for national reach, staying connected
    • Glass panel in Hooker Research Center (link) - need a group to advise and act when opportunities arise
    • Minority Health Project presentation (link) to the Carolina First Minority Alumni Committee (link)
  • Potential benefits
    • Give the Caucus the benefit of the knowledge, experience, connections, and organizational affiliations of MSC graduates
    • Link minority alumni across "generations", promote networking
    • Preserve the history of the Caucus and its achievements to remember, honor, inspire, and remind us of its significance
  • Purpose and objectives
    • Increase diversity among students at UNC-CH SPH
    • Increase diversity among faculty at UNC-CH SPH
    • Enrich the Caucus by giving it the benefit of the knowledge, experience, connections, and organizational resources of graduates
    • Be a resource, an advocate, and an advisory body for the School
    • Spearhead the Legacy Project to preserve the history of the activities anad accomplishments of the Caucus, its forerunners, its allies, through the present
    • Identify resources for diversity (General Alumni Association, Black Alumni Reunion, Carolina First Minority Alumni Committee)
  • Discussion
    • Sacoby noted that he has been talking with others about creating an alumni network for years. A network can promote diversity, increase opportunities for minority students at the School, and be another voice for the issues we care about.
    • The Diversity Survey that the Caucus carried out two years ago is a good starting point.
    • The Alumnet can work with the UNC-CH General Alumni Association (link) and the Black Alumni Reunion (link). [This year's reunion may have its Wednesday session at the Hooker Research Center on the topic of HIV prevention.]
    • Several MSC officers had discussions with the School about having a checkbox for the MSC on the alumni donation form.
    • Briana pointed out that SPH undergraduates (HPAA, BIOS, and NUTR) are for the most part not involved in the Caucus, yet they may have more energy and time than graduate students.
    • Melissa noted that people who have been away from the School for a few years lose touch with what is happening - there's a need for a newsletter or webpage so alumni can find out.
    • Sacoby has arranged to discuss faculty diversity with Dean Barbara Rimer during APHA on Sunday, December 11, at 4:00pm (location TBA). Members of the MSC Alumni Network are planning to meet beforehand to plan and then to attend the meeting.
    • We can use departmental and alumni newsletters to grow the group, but personal contacts may be most effective.
    • When we speak with people to tell them about MSCalumnet we can ask their help in identifying former MSC members. The School has a list of all alumni with race/ethnicity, but it does not record what roles people played.
    • We should try to interview the oldest alumni.
    • Vic added afterwards that Aundra Shields' position will be opening up as she leaves for the southwest, so we can suggest people we know who would be good in the Associate Dean for Student Affairs position.
    • We should form subcommittees for the various areas of interest, but we need to expand the group

  • Next steps
    • List names of past officers, Conference Planning Committee members and subcommittee chairs, email addresses, photos, recollections, documents, interviews, video clips
    • Annice will prepare an invitation letter to inform MSC alumni about the meeting with the Dean at APHA and how to get involved in MSCalumnet.
    • Danielle will meet with Janice Periquet (and Martha Monnett?) to see how the Alumnet can link to the School's alumni office.
    • Vic will place a link to the MSCalumnet page on the Minority Health Project home page (look on the left, under "Diversity-related activities at the UNC-CH School of Public Health")
    • Compile a list of potentially interested MSC alumni and email addresses (Vic will create a webform and non-public webpage)
    • Next conference call - Wednesday, November 16, early afternoon? Topics include proposing names for the new Dean for Student Affairs (Aundra's position)
    • Hold meetings at APHA (Annice will look for a setting - one prior to the meeting with Barbara Rimer and possibly one prior to or after the SPH reception) and the 27th Annual Minority Health Conference (Feb 24, 2006)

  • Volunteers will be needed to help initiate and chair subcommittees for
    • Student diversity
    • Faculty diversity
    • Curriculum / cultural competence
    • Liaison with the Caucus
    • Liaison with the SPH alumni office
    • Legacy Project
    • Outreach / expanding the network
    • Fundraising and liaison with the Carolina First Minority Alumni Committee
These subcommittees can be established when we have a sufficient number of members.
