  Lorraine Alexander, DrPH, clinical associate professor, and Karin Yeatts, PhD, research assistant professor, both in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, piloted the first UNC Gillings School MOOC this spring after Alexander’s MOOC proposal was chosen as one of UNC’s first five.

• EPID160 - Principles of Epidemiology for Public Health
  A 1997 webpage, created by Lorraine Alexander, for EPID160, the foundational epidemiology course taken by most students in the UNC Gillings School of Public Health. The course number was later changed to EPID600. Professor Carl Shy taught the course during the 1990s (and in some earlier years). Initially primarily a lecture course, Carl Shy transformed it into a course based primarily on small group applied learning. With hundreds of students each year, organizing and managing the small group activities and evaluations was a major operation. Lorraine Alexander played key roles in designing and coordinating the course. When the World Wide Web became available for instructor use during the late 1990s, Lorraine developed some of the first course websites at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. She also developed the Blackboard course website for EPID160. When Carl Shy retired (for the second time) and turned the course over to Victor Schoenbach, fortunately Lorraine Alexander stayed on as the course coordinator and helped Vic to learn about website creation among other essentials (see below for a few email excerpts).
