  William Howard Glaze, PhD, former professor and chair of environmental sciences and engineering (ESE) at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, died Dec. 17 at the age of 80. Dr. Glaze was founding director of the Carolina Environmental Program, which later became UNC’s Institute for the Environment (IE).

  Professor Emeritus, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026

  Bill Small was a 1960s graduate of the UNC School of Public Health who was recruited back to the School in 1971 to lead efforts to increase the numbers of Black students and graduates in a school that admitted its first Black graduate students in 1961.

  "Al" Tyroler, as Dr. H.A. Tyroler was known by his colleagues at the UNC School of Public Health, was one of the founding faculty members of the Department of Epidemiology.

  Norman Weatherly arrived in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1962, planning on a one-year postdoctoral appointment, but never left the UNC School of Public Health. By 1972, he was professor in the School's Department of Parasitology and Laboratory Practice (PALP).

  Charles Weiss, PhD, professor emeritus of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, passed away on Dec. 17. A resident of Carol Woods, in Chapel Hill, N.C., he had celebrated his 100th birthday with a party on Dec. 8.
